Consider the following: A recent magazine survey discovered that the world's most recognisable actor was Sir Sean Connery. When you order shellfish in the world's most prestigious restaurants there's a very good chance it will have come from Scottish waters. The biggest, most prestigious arts festival on the planet happens every August in Edinburgh. Manchester United – possibly the world's most famous football team – is managed by a Scotsman, Sir Alex Ferguson. The world's most recognisable golf course, Augusta, was designed by Scotsman Alistair Mackenzie and one of the most exciting new tennis talents is Scotsman Andy Murray.

All in all not bad for a country which would fit into the state of Texas several times over. . . .
